Design Matters: Traffic in Construction Work Zones

Creating a Smooth and Safe Traffic Flow

Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) is something we take very seriously at FOCUS. With distracted drivers and the need for increased safety in construction zones, it’s never been more important to ensure that proper MOT is maintained throughout construction.

Temporary Traffic Control

MOT is the design, installation, and operation of a variety of traffic control devices to establish a construction work zone while minimizing disruption to traffic. The primary function of temporary traffic control is to provide the movement of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians through the work zone. The flow should take place smoothly, safely, and without confusion because no one likes a detour or traffic jam.

These controls can incorporate variety of methods including flaggers, cones, barricades, flashing arrows, rumble strips, and striping during construction or maintenance. As work progresses and construction zones change, the traffic pattern and MOT measures shift as well.

Designing to Standards

Each agency has its own requirements and standards that must be followed. FOCUS takes great care in designing construction phasing to meet the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards, optimize traffic flow, and ensure the safety of the public and construction team. Our team also performs an extensive quality control process on every project to ensure the design meets the requirements needed for a safe work site.

Protecting Construction Workers and Public

These design solutions help separate construction workers from the traveling public, protect construction workers and equipment, and keep the traveling public out of the work zones. Transportation Department Manager Jason Watson shares, “MOT is usually one of the riskiest sides of engineering. When an accident occurs in a construction zone, the first thing that is usually investigated is whether there was proper traffic control.”

Work zone safety and awareness is critical for drivers and the men and women who build and maintain our roadways. MOT strategies help to ensure all of us make it safely home.
